Leading art and luxury business, Christie’s live auction of Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art (Part 1), together with the Modern and Contemporary Middle Eastern Art (Part 2) Online sale performed quite extraordinarily at the London auction with online sales realizing a combined total of £2,844,500 / $3,231,456.
Being the sixth year offering the autumn auction in London, the results of this year’s sale have certainly re-enforced the demand for quality works of art from the Middle East, Levant, Egypt and North Africa.
Topping the sale, was Iranian-born Ali Banisadr’s Broken Land, which sold for £415,800 against an initially predicted estimate of £250,000. The late Kamal Boullata’s Angelus II-I set a new world auction record, selling for £25,200. Other pieces performed exceptionally with Hedi Turki’s Plaine Fertile selling for £25,200 and Ahmed Mater’s Evolution of Man selling for £100,800 to mention a few.
Speaking on this, Meagan Kelly Horsman, Managing Director Christie’s Middle East said “We are delighted to have hosted the first live sale of Modern & Contemporary Art from the Middle East at Christie’s King Street since 2019, to a room full of clients, old and new alike. With lots of active bidding online, via the phones and in the room, I was particularly happy to see a world record set for Kamal Boullata at £25,200 and a live sale total of £2,191,140.”
