Abu Dhabi Art has unveiled an exciting lineup of participating curators and artist commissions for its much-anticipated 2023 edition. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, the art fair is set to be a beacon of creativity and innovation.
BEA Showcases Emerging Talent
One of the highlights of the upcoming Abu Dhabi Art 2023 is the “Beyond Emerging Artists” (BEA) program. Since 2017, BEA has provided a platform for emerging artists in the UAE to develop their art and realize ambitious projects. This year, the program features three outstanding artists: Almaha Jaralla, Samo Shalaby, and Latifa Saeed.
Under the mentorship and supervision of art historian, publisher, and curator Morad Montazami, these artists have been working on new commissions. Their works will be revealed at the Fair in an exhibition curated by Montazami. Reflecting on the artists, Montazami expressed his delight at collaborating with the talented trio, citing their impressive skills, interdisciplinary approaches, and shared concerns that bring their art together. The artists navigate an intriguing path between private and public spaces, presenting their unique vision and mindset. Their works are set to make a significant mark in the art world.
The BEA program is supported by the Friends of Abu Dhabi Art, an initiative launched in 2021, comprising individuals committed to supporting art and culture in the emirate.
Gateway Exhibition: “Maqam”
The annual Gateway exhibition, which focuses on local and international artists through unique perspectives, is curated by Venetia Porter. This year’s Gateway exhibition, titled “Maqam,” showcases the artistic journey of Emirati artist Hashel Al Lamki. The exhibition invites visitors to explore Al Lamki’s artistic evolution and the interplay between natural landscapes and human intervention, all inspired by the Al Ain neighborhood where the artist grew up. The exhibition is set to provide a comprehensive understanding of Al Lamki’s past works and future ambitions, creating a mesmerizing artistic odyssey.
Artist Commissions in Cultural Sites
Launched in 2017, the “Artist Commissions in Cultural Sites” program invites established artists to create site-specific works across Abu Dhabi emirate. This year, two acclaimed artists, Nujoom Al Ghanem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, have been commissioned to create captivating works in cultural sites. Their works will be unveiled during the fair in November and remain on display for two months.
Nujoom Al Ghanem, a renowned Emirati poet, artist, and multi-award-winning film director, expressed her excitement about participating in the fair. She shared her dedication to her art, which she views as a significant part of her life, and her aspiration to connect with the audience through her creations.
Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, an Emirati artist with a deep connection to the environment of Khorfakkan, presents his unique style, characterized by hand-made objects and drawings that mark time and memory through meditative repetition.
Abu Dhabi Art’s Growing Impact
Through its year-round exhibitions and artist commissions, Abu Dhabi Art plays a crucial role in supporting the art ecosystem in the region. As the fair celebrates its 15th edition this November, it continues to grow rapidly, with a record lineup of over 90 galleries from 31 countries.
